Wills in Ohio
A will is one of the foundational documents in an Ohio estate plan. It allows you to direct how property passing through your estate should be distributed, nominate an executor to administer your estate, and identify who you would want to care for minor children.
A will does not necessarily control everything you own. Property may instead pass through a trust, beneficiary designation, survivorship ownership, transfer-on-death designation, or another nonprobate arrangement.
A properly designed estate plan considers both what your will controls and what will pass outside of it.

Key Things to Know
A quick overview of the core decisions that shape an Ohio estate plan and how the different pieces work together.
A Will Directs Your Estate
Your will provides instructions for property that passes through your probate estate and allows you to nominate the person you want to serve as executor.
Not Everything Passes Through Your Will
Beneficiary designations, jointly owned property, trusts, and transfer-on-death arrangements may control certain assets regardless of what your will says.
Parents Can Nominate a Guardian
A will allows parents to identify who they would want to care for minor children if both parents are unable to do so. The court ultimately determines guardianship based on the circumstances.
